202 Public Officials Face Prosecution as IG Cracks Down on UGX 2.3 Billion Refund Default

Must read

The Inspectorate of Government (IG) has announced plans to prosecute 202 public officials who have failed to refund government money totaling 2.3 billion Ugandan shillings. In a public notice released on March 16, 2026, the anti-corruption body warned that legal action will be taken against those who continue to ignore directives to clear the outstanding balances.

According to the IG, the officials are accused of using government funds for personal gain instead of returning the money to the state as required. The Inspectorate explained that such actions have caused financial loss to the government and have negatively affected the delivery of public services to citizens.

The Inspectorate reminded all affected officials to immediately take steps to refund the money in order to avoid prosecution. The deadline for clearing the outstanding balances has been set for April 30, 2026. Authorities emphasized that this period provides a final opportunity for the officials to settle their obligations voluntarily before legal measures are taken.

In addition to the refund deadline, the listed officers have also been instructed to appear before the Inspectorate of Government on or before March 31, 2026, to reconcile their records and confirm the exact balances owed. Failure to comply with this directive may lead to further enforcement actions, including criminal prosecution.

The IG stated that those who remain defiant may face charges related to disobedience of lawful orders and abuse of office. Such offenses carry serious legal consequences under Ugandan law, particularly when public resources are involved.

Despite the tough stance, the Inspectorate noted that the notice serves as a final reminder and an opportunity for the affected officials to be heard. The process is meant to follow the principles of natural justice, ensuring that every individual is given a chance to explain their situation before further action is taken.

The Inspectorate of Government also reaffirmed its commitment to promoting integrity, transparency, and accountability in public service. The institution stressed that protecting public funds is essential for good governance and for ensuring that government resources are used to benefit the citizens of Uganda.

The IG concluded by urging all public officials to respect government financial procedures and to act responsibly when handling public funds. Authorities believe that holding accountable those who misuse government money will help strengthen trust in public institutions and improve service delivery across the country.
