Today morning, the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) officially kicked off its Baseline Education Census (BEC 2025) awareness campaign in the Elgon Region. The campaign aims to prepare the public and key education stakeholders for a nationwide data collection exercise starting on 8th June 2025. A special press conference was held to mobilize support and ensure that every education institution is ready to participate fully.
The event was led by Mr. Didacus Okoth, the UBOS Principal Public Relations Officer. He was joined by several local leaders, including Waboga Kasim, Deputy Town Clerk of Mbale City, Namugali Cassim, the District Chairperson, Nasike Asumin, Resident City Commissioner (RCC), SP Kaaura Andrew representing the Mbale City DPC, SP Okongo (DPC), and Musinguzi Pison, the District Internal Security Officer (DISO). Their presence showed strong support from both local government and security organs, which will play a key role in the smooth running of the census.
The leaders stressed the importance of this census, explaining that it will cover all education institutions, whether government-owned or privately run. This includes pre-primary, primary, secondary, vocational, and university levels. They reminded the public that accurate and complete information is essential for proper planning, resource allocation, and improving the quality of education in Uganda.
Institutions were urged to cooperate with UBOS enumerators during the data collection period and to be honest and timely in providing the required information. The speakers emphasized that the success of the census depends on everyone’s participation from school heads to local authorities.
As the campaign begins in the Elgon Region, UBOS is expected to carry out similar mobilization efforts across the country. The data collected will shape the future of Uganda’s education system by helping the government understand the current status and needs of all learning institutions.
This census marks a big step toward improving education planning in Uganda. With full cooperation from all sectors, it is hoped that BEC 2025 will provide reliable data that will benefit the education sector for years to come.
