Ugandan Helicopter Accident in Somalia!! Five Soldiers Dead, Several Injured

Must read

Early this morning, at around 7:30 am, a Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) Mi-24 helicopter crashed near Mogadishu International Airport, causing a tragic loss of life and injuries. The helicopter, with tail number AUO-015, went down about 200 meters east of the North Ramp while on a routine combat escort mission.

Onboard the aircraft were eight personnel, including six crew members. Unfortunately, five of these soldiers lost their lives in the crash. The remaining three crew members — the pilot, co-pilot, and flight engineer — survived but suffered serious injuries and severe burns. They were quickly evacuated for medical treatment at the AUSSOM Sector 1 Level II Hospital.

The crash was particularly dangerous because the helicopter was carrying munitions, which detonated upon impact. This caused significant damage to nearby buildings and injured three civilians who were close to the site. These civilians also received urgent medical care at the same hospital.

Emergency response teams acted quickly. Firefighters from Mogadishu International Airport, the United Nations, and the AUSSOM Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit worked together to control the situation, manage the wreckage, and support rescue efforts.

Authorities have launched an official investigation to find out what caused the helicopter to crash. The UPDF and their partners are committed to understanding the incident fully to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

Our thoughts go out to the families and comrades of the five soldiers who died. We also wish a speedy recovery to the injured crew and civilians affected by this heartbreaking event. May the souls of the fallen rest in peace.
