On the morning of July 3rd, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Abas Byakagaba, visited the Entebbe Police Division in a move aimed at strengthening discipline, welfare, and community relations. The IGP took time to inspect police facilities, including the barracks where officers and their families live. He carefully observed the state of infrastructure and engaged directly with the officers to better understand their challenges and needs.

During his address, IGP Byakagaba emphasized the importance of using government resources wisely. He urged officers to be accountable in all they do and to strictly follow the chain of command. He reminded them that strong leadership and proper control are key to effective policing. The IGP also highlighted the need to prioritise the welfare of police officers, stating that a happy officer is more likely to serve the public well.
Another important topic he touched on was the relationship between the police and the community. The IGP called on officers to build trust with local people and to work hand in hand with other government agencies. He pointed out that healthy partnerships and teamwork are essential for peace and security. He also stressed the importance of police officers taking care of their health, noting that a strong body supports a sharp mind.
Community policing and the sub-county policing model were also mentioned as key strategies in fighting crime and improving public safety. The IGP encouraged officers to take these models seriously and use them to bring services closer to the people.
One of the strongest messages from the IGP was his firm stand against corruption. He warned officers not to engage in any corrupt practices and to remain honest and transparent in their duties. “Corruption has no place in our police force,” he declared.
In a warm and unique gesture, the IGP also took time to meet with spouses of police officers. He listened to their concerns and recognised the important role they play in supporting the officers. He assured them that their wellbeing matters too.
The visit was attended by several high-ranking officials, including AIGP Dr. Moses Byaruhanga, AIGP Dr. Hadijja Namutebi, AIGP Bamunoba, the commander of the Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP), and the head of joint security operations at Entebbe International Airport. Their presence showed strong support for the IGP’s mission of reform and improvement.
This visit is part of a wider effort by the Uganda Police Force to boost morale, improve service delivery, and build trust with the public. It sent a clear message: integrity, accountability, and care for both officers and the public must always come first.
