Think Before You Post!! UPDF Warns Soldiers on Social Media Use

Must read

The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) have been reminded about the importance of discipline when using social media. This reminder came from Major Bilal Katamba, the Deputy Director of Defence Public Information (D/DDPI), during a recent address to trainees of the Pre-Level III Military Police Course at Nsujju Mporwe Barracks in Mpigi District.

Major Katamba warned the soldiers about the dangers of posting carelessly on social media. He emphasized that members of the UPDF are not ordinary citizens when it comes to public communication—they are guided by strict military laws. “As a soldier, you are accountable for every word or image you share online,” he said. He noted that while social media can be useful, misuse of it can lead to serious consequences including damaging careers and the reputation of the entire military.

He encouraged the trainees to be more responsible and thoughtful with what they post or share online. According to him, today’s soldiers must understand that communication is not just a skill but also a responsibility. A careless post can be misinterpreted, spread misinformation, or even harm national security. Therefore, soldiers must be cautious, respectful, and professional in all their online activities.

Major Katamba also highlighted the importance of working with the media in a positive and productive way. He said that when the military fails to share its own story, others may do it—and not always in the right way. “The military and the media must work together to tell our story. If we don’t, someone else will, and it may not be accurate,” he explained.

He praised the trainees for their commitment and encouraged them to develop the communication skills needed to engage with the public wisely. He added that the UPDF’s strong image both at home and in international missions is largely due to good communication strategies and openness with the press.

This message comes at a time when social media use is growing quickly, and the line between personal and public communication is becoming more blurred. The UPDF is showing that even in the age of digital communication, discipline and responsibility remain key values for every soldier.
