Empowering Uganda’s Youth!! UCC Launches Digital Safety Debate Series in Kabarole

Must read

The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has officially launched the Youth in ICT debate series in Kabarole District, Western Uganda, with an important theme: Digital Safety. This initiative aims to educate and empower young people to safely navigate the digital world as technology becomes a bigger part of their daily lives.

The kickoff event was hosted at Divine Mercy Secondary School, where students were inspired to learn more about online safety and responsible digital behavior. As part of the build-up to the first major debate, the UCC team visited several schools across the district, including St. Maria Goretti Girls, Mpanga Secondary School, and St. Leo’s Kyegobe Secondary School. During these visits, the team sensitized students about the dangers and opportunities of the internet—teaching them how to protect their privacy, avoid cyberbullying, and recognize online scams.

These school engagements are part of a wider effort to prepare the students for the first debate, which will take place at Nyakasura School. The debates offer students a platform to express their views, build confidence, and engage in meaningful discussions about digital rights, responsibilities, and safety.

Digital literacy is now more important than ever. With many young Ugandans accessing the internet through smartphones, the risks of online harm are growing. Through these debates, UCC is not only spreading awareness but also building a generation of digitally smart and responsible citizens.

The energy and enthusiasm among students has been encouraging, as many showed a deep interest in learning how to use the internet more safely and wisely. The Youth in ICT debate series will continue to reach more schools and regions, ensuring that digital safety becomes a shared value among Uganda’s youth.

As the digital world grows, Uganda must prepare its young people to embrace it with knowledge and caution. Thanks to UCC’s efforts, the message is clear: Digital safety is not just an option—it’s a necessity.
