The Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who also doubles as the first son of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, is on the verge of becoming a Member of the 12th Parliament on the UPDF ticket. His anticipated entry into Parliament has already sparked discussions across political and military circles, given his dual role as the country’s top military officer and a potential legislator.
If confirmed, Gen. Muhoozi will join a select group of UPDF representatives, bringing with him decades of military experience and a high-profile national presence. His position is expected to strengthen the UPDF’s influence in legislative affairs, particularly on matters of national security, defence policy, and regional stability.
Observers note that Gen. Muhoozi’s potential parliamentary role comes at a critical time as Uganda navigates both internal and regional security challenges. Supporters argue that his direct involvement in Parliament could enhance coordination between the military and civilian authorities, ensuring that national security concerns are well-represented in legislative decisions.
Critics, however, have raised concerns over the concentration of power, noting that holding the position of CDF while simultaneously serving as a legislator could blur the lines between military command and political influence. Despite this, the UPDF Council is expected to finalize the selection process soon, formally confirming Gen. Muhoozi as part of the next cohort of military MPs.
With the 12th Parliament poised to take shape, all eyes are on the UPDF’s lineup and the role Gen. Muhoozi will play in shaping Uganda’s legislative and security landscape in the coming years.
