The Chief of Defence Forces of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has donated sports equipment and a cash contribution of UGX 10 million to support the upcoming Tooro Kingdom Inter-Clans Football Tournament. The tournament is expected to bring together different clans from the kingdom to compete in a friendly but competitive football event aimed at strengthening unity and community participation.
The competition will take place in the historic Tooro Kingdom and is scheduled to officially kick off on April 7, 2026. According to organizers, the tournament will run for nearly a month before concluding with a grand final on May 4, 2026. The event is expected to attract football lovers, cultural leaders, youth groups, and community members from different parts of the kingdom.
The contribution from Gen Kainerugaba includes football equipment as well as financial assistance to help facilitate the smooth organization of the tournament. The support is expected to assist organizers in preparing playing grounds, acquiring sports gear, and ensuring that participating teams have the necessary equipment.
The donation was officially handed over on behalf of the Chief of Defence Forces by Richard Karemire, a Brigadier General serving as the Joint Staff for Formal Education, Sports and Culture in the UPDF. The handover ceremony highlighted the continued partnership between the military and community institutions in promoting development initiatives.
The items and financial support were received by Kateeba Divine Francis Atwoki, the Tooro Kingdom Minister for Education, Youth and Sports. As a key leader within the kingdom’s administration, he plays an important role in coordinating youth activities and sports development across the region.
During the handover ceremony, representatives of the UPDF explained that the contribution was meant to support the organization of the tournament and ensure that it becomes a successful event that benefits the youth and the wider community.
Gen Kainerugaba also commended the leadership and people of Tooro Kingdom for their long-standing relationship with the National Resistance Army during the liberation struggle, which later transformed into the modern Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces. According to him, the people of Tooro have historically supported national efforts aimed at maintaining peace and stability.
He emphasized that the UPDF remains committed to supporting activities that promote national unity and community development. Sports, he noted, play an important role in bringing people together and creating opportunities for young people to showcase their talents.
The Chief of Defence Forces further explained that initiatives such as football tournaments can help keep young people engaged in positive activities while strengthening bonds within communities. By supporting such events, the UPDF hopes to encourage teamwork, discipline, and healthy competition among youth.
Receiving the donation, Hon. Kateeba expressed appreciation to Gen Kainerugaba and the entire UPDF fraternity for their support toward the kingdom’s sporting activities. He described the gesture as a clear sign of cooperation between security institutions and cultural authorities.
According to him, the contribution will greatly help in organizing the tournament and ensuring that teams have the necessary resources to participate effectively. He noted that sports events often require significant logistical and financial support, which makes such partnerships very valuable.
Hon. Kateeba also highlighted the importance of collaboration between cultural institutions and security forces in promoting peace and development. He said that when different institutions work together, it becomes easier to implement programs that benefit communities.
He added that cultural and sporting events help preserve traditions and strengthen the identity of communities. In many kingdoms across Uganda, clan-based competitions are used not only for entertainment but also for promoting unity and cultural pride.
The Tooro Kingdom Inter-Clans Football Tournament is expected to bring together teams representing various clans within the kingdom. Through friendly competition, the event will allow members of different clans to interact, build friendships, and celebrate their shared heritage.
Such tournaments also provide an opportunity for talented young players to showcase their football skills. Some organizers believe that events like these can help identify young athletes who may later pursue football at professional or national levels.
Officials also say the tournament will attract spectators from different districts within the Tooro region, making it both a sporting and cultural gathering. The event is expected to energize local communities and promote tourism within the kingdom.
The ceremony where the donation was presented was also attended by Henry Mwijuka, a Major serving as the UPDF Staff Officer for Sports. His presence reflected the military’s continued involvement in promoting sports development across the country.
Over the years, the UPDF has supported several community initiatives including sports tournaments, education programs, and development projects. These activities are part of broader efforts to strengthen the relationship between the military and the civilian population.
Many observers believe that partnerships between institutions such as the UPDF and cultural kingdoms can play a key role in promoting peace, unity, and youth empowerment. When communities receive support for positive activities, it helps build trust and encourages constructive engagement.
As preparations for the tournament continue, organizers remain optimistic that the event will be a memorable one for both players and spectators. The support from Gen Kainerugaba and the UPDF is expected to contribute significantly to the success of the competition.
With the kickoff date drawing closer, football fans across Tooro Kingdom are already looking forward to the exciting matches that will bring together clans, families, and communities in celebration of sport and culture.
