On Good Friday, a day that holds deep meaning for Christians around the world, Dennis Zziwa, a second-year law student from Kampala International University, took part in a moving reenactment of the “Way of the Cross” at Our Lady of Africa Church. In this powerful tradition, participants act out the suffering and journey of Jesus Christ before his crucifixion. Dennis was chosen to portray Jesus, a role that requires both emotional strength and physical endurance.
As the procession went on, Dennis fully committed to his role, carrying the cross and enduring symbolic beatings meant to reflect the pain Jesus experienced. However, during the act, the situation became more intense than expected. He sustained real injuries from the beatings, turning what was meant to be a symbolic act into a painful reality. Despite the injuries, the moment showed his deep dedication and the seriousness with which he approached the role.
Red Cross staff who were present quickly stepped in to provide first aid and ensure that he was stable. Their quick response helped manage the situation and prevent the injuries from becoming worse. After receiving initial treatment at the scene, Dennis was transferred to Lamone Health Center for further medical care and observation.
This incident has sparked conversations about safety during religious reenactments. While such events are meant to bring communities closer to their faith and help people reflect on important spiritual moments, it also highlights the need for careful planning to avoid harm. Dennis Zziwa’s experience is a reminder of the powerful emotions behind Good Friday traditions, but also the importance of ensuring that participants are protected.
Even so, many people have praised his courage and commitment. For those who witnessed the event, his performance made the story of Jesus feel more real and deeply touching. His actions have left a lasting impression, showing how faith, when expressed with such passion, can move and inspire an entire community.
