Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, who is part of the defence team for Hon. Muwanga Kivumbi, has strongly objected to the recent changes in the charge sheet involving 25 detainees. The objection comes after the court amended the original charges to include 24 additional accused persons, a move Lukwago says is unfair and against the law.
In court, Lukwago described the amendment as an ambush, saying it is prejudicial to the detainees and their families. He emphasized that the Uganda Law Society’s #RapidResponse Team had already met with the relatives of those detained and had gathered all the necessary information to support their bail applications. According to him, the sudden addition of more names on the charge sheet undermines the efforts of the legal teams and violates procedural fairness.
The Lord Mayor concluded by praying that the court grant bail to all 25 detainees, allowing them to return home without further delay. Legal experts following the case note that the development could have serious implications for the rights of the accused and the integrity of court proceedings if not carefully handled.
The situation highlights growing concerns about how legal processes are managed in high-profile cases, with advocates calling for transparency and adherence to the law to ensure justice is served.
