Today, Monday 16th June 2025, Uganda has taken an important step in its democratic journey as polling for the Village Older Persons Committees gets underway. This is the first election under the official 2025–2026 General Elections Roadmap, and it marks a special moment for older citizens across the country.
This election is dedicated to Ugandan citizens aged 60 years and above. To be eligible to vote, one must appear on both the National Voters Register and the Special Interest Groups (SIGs) Register in their respective villages. These committees play a vital role in representing the voices, needs, and concerns of older persons at the local level.
For many seniors, this is more than just an election—it is a chance to be heard, to take part in leadership, and to influence decisions that affect their lives directly. As voting takes place across villages today, citizens are encouraged to support their elders in participating in this peaceful and meaningful process.
The Electoral Commission and local authorities are working together to ensure a smooth and well-organized polling day. Security, accessibility, and transparency are key priorities to help make sure every eligible elder can vote without challenges.
This election reminds all Ugandans that democracy includes everyone, no matter their age. By empowering older persons to elect their own representatives, the country is recognizing their experience, wisdom, and value in society.
As the first step in a larger electoral season, today’s event sets the tone for what is hoped to be a free, fair, and inclusive election period in Uganda.
