Security chiefs
have been left in shock after one of the assailants who attacked and killed a
UPDF officer while on patrol in Kapeeka, Nakaseke District last week, has
committed suicide in police custody, SpyReports has learnt.
According to
our intelligence sources, the assailant, who is now deceased, has been
identified as Issa Muwonge, alias Salongo.
Security
sources say Salongo was arrested in Kapeeka after intelligence got information
that he was among the assailants who attacked and Killed a UPDF officers.
"After
we arrested him, he was interrogated and he revealed to us that his two associates
were in Mbale and Tororo, respectively," says a security source.
The source
adds that he was escorted under tight security to help in the arrest of his
associates in Mbale and Tororo.
"We
first went to Mbale to arrest one associate but we failed to arrest one in
Mbale," says another security source.
The source
says he was taken to Tororo to arrest another suspect but it was in already
night.
The source
says intelligence officers who had brought him told police at Tororo to create
a separate cell for him.
"We
asked for a separate cell to avoid him leaking our information to other
suspects in the cell," another security source tells us.
He adds that
Salongo was taken to Male Juvenile cell which was vacant and he was locked up
alone.
Sources at Tororo police told us that during night, he tore part of his T-shirts
and used it to commit suicide.
"We
found him hanging in the police custody in the morning," says another
police source, adding that his body was taken to Tororo Hospital for
postmortem. DPC Tororo confirmed the incident and said investigations are going
on. The case was
registered under GEF 123/2022.
In the attack,
a UPDF soldier was shot dead but the security team comprising of Police and
UPDF Soldiers fired back killing one assailant on the spot. Kakooza said that
the security team also recovered one gun that was used in the attack.
