A Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) soldier has been arrested for strangling a man to death during a fight in a bar.
Private John Lowase is said to have strangled Lorisa Cheporoke, 66, to death in a bar in Multasukan village, Loppedot parish, Abilyep Sub- County in Amudat District.
The Mt Moroto Regional Police Spokesperson, Mr Mike Longole, said the soldier strangled the man after he refused to pay his bill.
“It is alleged that the deceased had gone to drink at a local bar but left without clearing the bills after getting drunk, prompting the suspect to follow and strangle him to death,”Mr Longole said.
He said Police visited the scene and the Postmortem was done.
The 3rd Division UPDF Spokesperson, Maj Isaac Oware, said Private John Lowase deserted the army in 2016.
“He underwent refresher training in Kavera Training School in Kasese District. Later, he was among the soldiers who were nominated to undergo the mandatory pre-mission training (for then African Union Mission to Somalia (AMISOM), now African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) at Peace Support Operations Center-Singo in Nakaseke District,”Maj Oware said.
Maj Oware added that, upon completion of pre-mission training, he (suspect) belonged to 346 Battalion which was part of Uganda Battle Group XIV (UGABAG XIV) to serve in a peacekeeping mission in Somalia.
According to Maj Oware normally, UGABAG serves one operational year and rotates out of the mission area to Uganda for further tasking.
“After UGABAG XIV rotation and post mission induction, the troops were granted one-month compassionate pass leave before returning to mother units. Pte Lowase did not return to his mother unit or report to any army establishment, hence a status of Absence Without Official Leave (AWOL) was entered into the UPDF system - rendering him a deserter,”he said.
“It's sad that (Pte Lowase, deserter) conducted himself in such a cruel manner leading to the precious loss of life of an innocent Ugandan. As UPDF, we do not condone such degrading misconduct,” he said.
He said the suspect who is currently detained at Amudat Central Police station will be charged with murder contrary to section 188 and 189 of the Penal Code Act (PCA) and desertion contrary to section 146 of the UPDF Act 2005 No.7 among other accounts. ENDS
