Must read

In a leadership reshuffle within the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has appointed new commandants to helm the country’s top military training institutions — the National Defence College and the Senior Command and Staff College, both based in Jinja.

Brigadier General Alex Opolot Olupot has been named the new Commandant of the National Defence College Uganda (NDC-U), succeeding Major General Francis Okello, who is set to retire later this year. Brig. Gen. Olupot previously served as the UPDF Joint Staff Training and Doctrine, bringing with him a wealth of experience in military education and strategic planning.

Major General Okello, the founding Commandant of NDC-U since its inception in 2022, is lauded for laying the foundational framework of Uganda’s highest military educational institution. His tenure is marked by discipline, academic rigor, and the advancement of strategic leadership within the UPDF ranks.

In another appointment, Brigadier General Micheal Kabango, who has been serving as the Chief of Staff Land Forces, has been designated as the new Commandant of the Senior Command and Staff College (SCSC) in Kimaka. He replaces Major General George Igumba, who also heads into retirement after over 40 years of distinguished service.

Maj. Gens. Okello and Igumba leave behind a legacy of excellence and dedication, having served in various command and staff roles throughout their careers. Their mentorship and contributions to Uganda’s military professionalism will be remembered as a cornerstone of the UPDF’s evolution.

The UPDF fraternity has extended heartfelt congratulations to Brig. Gens. Olupot and Kabango, expressing confidence in their ability to elevate the institutions to new heights. With their strategic acumen and leadership experience, the future of military education in Uganda looks poised for greater transformation.

These appointments signal a fresh chapter in the UPDF’s commitment to continuous learning, leadership development, and strategic defense capability.
