The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) have this morning killed two armed terrorists during a counter-terrorism operation in Munyonyo, a quiet and upscale suburb of Kampala. The operation was carried out as part of efforts to ensure security ahead of the Martyrs Day celebrations, which attract thousands of pilgrims from across the country and beyond.
According to Colonel Chris Magezi, the Acting Director of Defence Public Information, the UPDF acted on accurate intelligence and swiftly moved in to stop the suspected terrorists before they could cause harm. The operation, which took place early Tuesday morning, was described as “intelligence-led,” meaning the security teams had been tracking the suspects closely before deciding to act.
The successful interception of the two terrorists has reassured the public of the army’s commitment to protecting the country from all forms of threats. Security across Kampala has since been tightened, especially around religious sites and public gatherings, as Uganda prepares for the annual Martyrs Day events at Namugongo. These celebrations are deeply important to the Christian community, commemorating the lives of Ugandan martyrs who died for their faith.
Although the situation was serious, authorities have urged the public to stay calm. “We are on high alert,” said Colonel Magezi. “But we encourage citizens to continue with their plans while remaining observant and cooperative with security officers.”
People are also being reminded to report anything unusual—such as strange objects, unfamiliar individuals behaving suspiciously, or unattended bags—to the police or army. Working hand in hand with the community, the security forces believe they can prevent future threats and keep everyone safe.
This morning’s incident highlights the reality of ongoing threats, but it also shows the strength and readiness of Uganda’s security forces. As the country counts down to Martyrs Day, the successful operation in Munyonyo serves as both a warning to enemies of peace and a message of hope to law-abiding citizens.
