Breaking News!! Police Officer Dies in Motorcycle Crash While Chasing Suspects

Must read

A police officer from Nsangi Police Station has died in a tragic road accident that happened early Saturday morning in Namagoma, near Prompet Fuel Station, along the Kampala-Masaka Highway.

The deceased has been identified as No. 52679 Police Constable Otema Ben, a 36-year-old Acholi officer, who was on duty at the time of the incident. He was attached to the Nsangi Police Station and a resident of Nsangi Central in Kyengera Town Council, Wakiso District.

According to police reports, the fatal crash occurred at around 4:30 AM on 3rd May 2025, when PC Otema received information about a vehicle suspected to be involved in smuggling activities. At the time, he was deployed with other officers at Luqman Fuel Station with a police patrol vehicle, UP 1328 Toyota Land Cruiser.

Instead of taking the patrol vehicle, PC Otema reportedly called a nearby bodaboda rider, who responded quickly. Otema jumped onto the motorcycle, registration number UMA 037CD, Haojue red in colour, and they started chasing the suspected car from Nsangi towards Kampala — at a high speed.

Unfortunately, as they approached Prompet Fuel Station in Namagoma, another vehicle, a green Benz registration number UAH 901R, driven by Mr. Kagenda Sirage, was also heading in the same direction. Mr. Kagenda attempted to turn into the fuel station, but as he branched, the motorcycle hit a road hump, lost control, and crashed into the car near the driver’s side indicator.

The collision was severe. Both the rider and PC Otema were thrown off the motorcycle. The rider fled the scene immediately, leaving Otema critically injured. A team of police officers arrived quickly and rushed him to Galaxy Clinic in Nsangi, where he sadly passed away.

The motorcycle rider remains unidentified and is currently on the run.

Police action:

The accident scene was visited by senior officers, including DPC Nsangi SP Cheben Rogers, and a team comprising traffic officers, scene of crime officers, and field force members.

The deceased’s body was taken to Mulago City Mortuary for a postmortem examination.

Both the Benz and the motorcycle have been towed and are parked at Maya Bus Checkpoint awaiting mechanical inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles (IOV).

A Police Form 94 was issued to the driver of the Benz.

The Command Centre was informed and an investigation is currently ongoing.

The tragic incident has left colleagues at Nsangi Police Station in deep sorrow, as PC Otema Ben was known to be a dedicated and disciplined officer.

Investigations into the matter are ongoing, and police are urging the public to provide any information that may help locate the unknown bodaboda rider involved in the accident.
