Must read

The town of Mukono is mourning after a tragic road accident claimed three lives and left ten others injured in a terrifying crash that took place on the night of May 20, 2025, at around 9:00 PM. The crash occurred at the busy Wantoni Junction along the Jinja Highway, one of the most heavily used roads in the district.

According to a press statement from SP Kananura Michael, spokesperson for the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, the accident involved a total of nine vehicles four motor vehicles and five motorcycles along with several roadside food vendors who were caught in the chaos.

The fatal crash was caused when the driver of a Mitsubishi Fuso truck (registration number UBB 422U) reportedly lost control of the vehicle. The truck veered into the opposite lane at Wantoni Junction and violently crashed into other vehicles and motorcycles, including a food vending area where people were gathered.

The collision involved three Toyota Hiace taxis (UBP 359W, UAW 042E, and UAQ 398L) that were either parked or moving through the junction at the time. In addition, five motorcycles — UFL 976T (Bajaj), UFN 916P (TVS), UEU 698W (Bajaj), UDK 495B (Bajaj), and UDZ 777A (Bajaj) — were either hit directly or caught in the aftermath.

Three people died instantly at the scene due to the severity of the impact. The victims included both riders and pedestrians. Ten others sustained injuries, some of them critical. Among the injured were motorcycle riders, taxi passengers, pedestrians, and roadside food vendors. Emergency responders rushed to the scene, and the injured were quickly taken to nearby hospitals, including Mukono General Hospital, for treatment. The bodies of the deceased were taken to Kawolo Hospital mortuary for postmortem examination.

The area at Wantoni Junction, known for its busy traffic and roadside activity, was left in chaos as police officers, bystanders, and emergency teams worked through the wreckage. The vehicles and motorcycles involved in the accident have all been towed to Mukono Police parking yard. Traffic investigators are now examining the scene and the vehicles to understand exactly what went wrong.

The incident has once again raised concerns over road safety, especially on major highways where heavy trucks share space with taxis, motorcycles, and pedestrians. Authorities have urged drivers to exercise caution, especially in busy urban zones like Wantoni, and have assured the public that a full investigation is underway.

The Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety has promised to provide updates as investigations continue, while calling on the public to remain calm and cooperate with ongoing inquiries.

As Mukono tries to recover from this painful event, families of the victims and the community at large are calling for stronger road safety measures, better enforcement of traffic rules, and safer planning around busy junctions to prevent future tragedies.
