Corruption Storm Hits UIRI!! IG Suspends All Staff Recruitment

Must read

The Uganda Industrial Research Institute (UIRI) has been ordered to stop all staff recruitment with immediate effect, following serious corruption allegations. This bold directive comes from the Inspectorate of Government (IG), and it was formally issued to Prof. Charles Kwesiga, the Executive Director of UIRI. The IG believes that the ongoing recruitment processes at the institute are tainted with irregularities and abuse of office.

The decision follows a series of investigations into how recruitment is being handled at UIRI. One of the key people under scrutiny is Dr. Dick Kamugasha, who serves as the Deputy Executive Director at the institute. The Inspectorate revealed that early findings suggest corruption and misconduct during the hiring process.

On June 11, 2025, the IG held a meeting with officials from UIRI to discuss the matter. At the meeting, both sides agreed that all recruitment at UIRI should be suspended until the investigations are fully completed. The Deputy Inspector General of Government, Dr. Patricia Achan Okiria, signed off the official communication, citing her powers under the Ugandan Constitution and the Inspectorate of Government Act. These laws give the Inspectorate the authority to make orders and give directions if corruption or abuse of office is suspected.

This development is a major blow to UIRI, which is known for its role in promoting industrial research and innovation in Uganda. The suspension could slow down some of its programs, especially those relying on new staff. However, the IG insists that it is necessary to take this action now in order to ensure transparency, fairness, and accountability in public service.

Members of the public or stakeholders seeking further clarification have been asked to contact Hajjat Ali Munira, the Manager for Strategic Partnerships and Public Relations, or Mr. Farouk Kayondo, the Supervisor in the same department. They can be reached via phone or email for any updates or inquiries related to this issue.

This move by the IG sends a strong message that corruption will not be tolerated, especially in public institutions. As the investigations continue, the public now waits to see what actions will be taken next based on the final findings.
