Crackdown on Illegal Security Firms as Police Unveil 2026 Licensed Operators

Must read

The Uganda Police Force, through its official platform Police Uganda (@PoliceUg), has released the official 2026 list of licensed Private Security Organisations (PSOs) and authorized gun dealers operating in the country. The list was published in accordance with the Firearms Act and the Police Act, which regulate the ownership, sale, and management of firearms as well as the operations of private security companies.

According to the police, only companies appearing on this list are legally permitted to provide private security services or deal in firearms across the country. Authorities emphasized that the move is intended to strengthen public safety, regulate the growing private security industry, and ensure that all companies handling firearms follow strict legal procedures.

Police officials explained that every year, private security firms and gun dealers are required to renew their licenses and meet specific standards before being allowed to continue operating. These standards include proper training of security personnel, secure storage of firearms, compliance with national security guidelines, and adherence to professional conduct. Companies that fail to meet these requirements risk losing their licenses.

The police also warned the public and businesses to be careful when hiring security services. They urged individuals, organizations, and companies to verify whether a security firm is on the officially approved list before signing any contracts. Hiring unlicensed security companies, authorities say, can expose people to serious security risks and legal complications.

In addition, the police cautioned that any private security organization or gun dealer found operating without proper authorization will face strict legal action. Such companies may have their operations shut down immediately, while their managers could face prosecution under the relevant laws governing firearms and security services.

The release of the list is also part of broader efforts by the government to improve accountability in the security sector. With the increasing demand for private security services in businesses, residential areas, banks, and institutions, authorities say it is important that only trusted and properly vetted companies are allowed to operate.

Police further encouraged members of the public to report any suspicious security companies or individuals illegally dealing in firearms. They noted that cooperation between the public and law enforcement agencies is essential in preventing crime and ensuring that weapons do not fall into the wrong hands.

Authorities say the updated 2026 list will help the public clearly identify the companies that are operating legally. They added that transparency in licensing helps build trust between security providers and the communities they serve.
