EC Releases Statement On How To Pay Your Nomination Fee for Uganda’s Parliamentary Elections

Must read

The Electoral Commission of Uganda has released an important notice for all individuals intending to run for the upcoming Parliamentary Elections. According to the announcement, every nomination paper must be accompanied by proof of payment of a nomination fee amounting to three million Uganda Shillings (UGX 3,000,000). The payment must be made to the Uganda Administration through banks authorized to collect Non-Tax Revenue (NTR).

To make the payment process easy and transparent, aspirants are required to follow a clear set of steps. First, candidates should visit the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) website at www.ura.go.ug. On the homepage, they need to locate the “Make a Payment” icon, usually at the bottom left corner, and select “Generate Payment Slip.” The payment type is automatically set as DT, which should be confirmed. Under the Payment Category, aspirants must choose “Other NTR” and fill in the required taxpayer details. If a Tax Identification Number (TIN) is available, entering it will auto-fill most details. Without a TIN, candidates must manually provide their full name and other mandatory information such as District or City, County or Municipality, Sub-county or Division, Parish, and Village.

Next, candidates should select “Electoral Commission” from the Ministry/Department/Agency dropdown list to ensure the payment is properly reflected. Then, under the Sub-category, choose “Nomination Fees,” and under Tax Head, select “Parliamentary Candidate.” The amount of UGX 3,000,000 will appear automatically. After confirming the details and entering the security text as shown, a Payment Registration Number (PRN) is generated. Candidates should print or note down this PRN and present it at any authorized bank. Once the payment is processed, the bank will issue a receipt confirming the transaction.

To complete the process, the bank-issued receipt must be presented at the Electoral Commission Headquarters Cashier’s Office to obtain a General Receipt. For those unable to collect the receipt in person, the bank payment slip with the PRN can be presented to the District Election Administrator, who will verify the payment with EC Headquarters and facilitate the issuance of the General Receipt.

The Electoral Commission emphasizes that aspirants should not make any payments to District or City Administration accounts. Strict adherence to the prescribed payment procedure is crucial to avoid unnecessary inconveniences and ensure a smooth nomination process. By following these steps carefully, aspiring members of parliament can confidently fulfill their nomination requirements and take one step closer to representing their communities in Uganda’s Parliament.

Signed by Kamugisha Richard Baabo, Acting Secretary of the Electoral Commission, this guidance reflects the Commission’s commitment to regular, free, and fair elections.
