The Electoral Commission (EC) has unveiled important updates and dates for Uganda’s 2026 General Elections, which will be held in just a few months. These updates include the nomination of candidates, the election of Special Interest Groups (SIGs), and the overall roadmap leading up to election day.
Key Electoral Dates:
The 2026 General Elections will be held on specific dates for different categories of elections. The Presidential and Parliamentary elections are slated to take place on January 20, 2026, followed by district elections and municipal elections. The dates for Special Interest Groups elections will also be carefully managed to ensure all citizens are represented.
The Electoral Commission has already completed the nomination of candidates, with 83,597 candidates nominated for the 45,505 elective positions across Uganda. These positions include the presidency, parliamentary seats, and various local government councils. The candidates are now in full campaign mode, rallying for votes while adhering to the Commission’s campaign guidelines.
Nomination and Petitions:
Following the nomination process, the EC received about 300 petitions regarding some of the candidates. These petitions are being carefully reviewed to ensure that no candidate is unfairly disqualified or allowed to run against the law. This process highlights the Electoral Commission’s commitment to fairness and transparency in the lead-up to the elections.
Additionally, Voter Location Slips (VLS) will be issued shortly, and voters are encouraged to check their polling station locations in advance. This system aims to make voting more convenient and accessible for everyone, ensuring a smooth experience on election day.
