Eliminate Malaria Now!! Pilgrim Africa To Launch School-Based Malaria Prevention Project in Amuria District

Must read

Pilgrim Africa, in partnership with Uganda’s Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education and Sports, and the Amuria District Local Government, is set to launch a new initiative to combat malaria in schools. The Pilgrim Protect School Malaria Project will officially commence on May 8, 2025, at Amuria Primary School in Amuria Town Council.

This initiative is part of Uganda’s broader School Health Program and targets boarding schools located in regions where malaria remains a serious public health concern. Evidence shows that school-aged children are particularly vulnerable to malaria, which contributes to absenteeism, reduced academic performance, and, in severe cases, death.

Malaria’s impact extends beyond health it places significant burdens on families, school systems, and the broader educational outcomes of affected regions. In response, Pilgrim Africa, in collaboration with the National Malaria Elimination Division, has developed a comprehensive strategy aimed at protecting students in high-risk areas.

The project will implement a range of interventions to curb malaria transmission in schools. These include indoor residual spraying in classrooms and dormitories, regular malaria screening, and health education focused on prevention. In addition, both students and staff will receive training on how to identify, test, and treat malaria cases early. Parents will also be encouraged to ensure their children are in good health before returning to school.

Innovative new spraying tools will be piloted in Amuria as part of the project, aiming to reduce operational costs and facilitate future expansion to more schools.

This effort is supported by a coalition of partners, including Goizper Group, the Innovative Vector Control Consortium (IVCC), and local field teams working closely with Pilgrim Africa. Their shared goal is to develop more cost-effective, scalable, and long-lasting solutions for malaria prevention in Uganda.

The launch marks a significant milestone in the fight against malaria and the drive to ensure healthier, more productive school environments. By reducing malaria risk, the project enhances students’ well-being and supports their academic success.

The Pilgrim Protect School Malaria Project is a powerful example of what can be achieved when government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and communities work together. It represents not just a health intervention, but a commitment to building safe, nurturing schools where children can thrive and reach their full potential.
