Uganda is preparing for the nomination of candidates for local government positions, including District and City Chairpersons, Lord Mayor, and Councillors, as well as Special Interest Groups (SIGs). The official period for these nominations is set to take place between September 3rd and 5th, 2025. This marks a crucial step in the local electoral process, and both candidates and their supporters are expected to participate responsibly.
The Uganda Police has issued a public notice advising candidates to strictly follow the guidelines issued by the Electoral Commission. Supporters are also urged to comply with laws regulating traffic and public order, ensuring that their activities do not inconvenience other road users or cause disruptions in the community.
Authorities have emphasized the need to maintain a peaceful environment during the nomination period. Candidates are warned against engaging in acts of hooliganism, including the recruitment or use of rogue youths commonly referred to as “egaali,” who are often involved in intimidation or violence. Cooperation with the police is strongly encouraged to ensure that the nomination process is smooth, orderly, and free from conflict.
The announcement reflects a strong commitment by law enforcement and electoral bodies to ensure a transparent and safe nomination period. Candidates who adhere to these guidelines not only protect their campaigns but also contribute to a democratic and peaceful electoral process in Uganda.
