Two lawyers, Mr. Mwanjuzi Bob and Mr. Kalamu Lawrence, found themselves in serious legal trouble this afternoon after being taken to court over fraud-related charges. The two were arraigned before the Buganda Road Chief Magistrates’ Court following a joint operation by @AntiGraft_SH, the Criminal Investigations Directorate (@CID1_UG), and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (@ODPPUGANDA).
The court heard that on April 20, 2023, the two advocates, together with others who are still on the run, created a fake lease agreement. This document claimed to show a lease between two companies—SEMA Holding Limited and Ephrata Investment Group Ltd. But in reality, that agreement never existed.
According to prosecutors, the fake lease was used to trick Kalpana Abe and her company, SEMA Holding Limited, into handing over UGX917 million. The money was said to be for an investment in a business project—the Blackzone Recreation Center, located at Plot 3A Lugogo By-Pass. However, the entire transaction was built on lies.
The charges they now face include forgery, conspiracy to commit a felony, and obtaining money by false pretenses. These are serious offenses under Ugandan law and could carry heavy penalties if the two are found guilty.
Because of the gravity of the accusations, the court has ordered that both Mr. Mwanjuzi and Mr. Kalamu be remanded to prison. They will remain in custody until August 13, 2025, as investigations continue.
This case has caught public attention, not just because of the amount of money involved, but also because the accused are legal professionals who were expected to uphold the law—not break it.
