From Census to Development! UBOS Donates Thousands of Tablets to Improve National Data Systems

Must read

The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) has donated 4,050 tablets and six computers to religious, cultural and key planning institutions to strengthen data collection and improve evidence-based decision-making in the country. The handover took place in Kampala and is part of UBOS’ post-census strategy under the Fourth Plan for National Statistical Development (PNSD IV).

The tablets were previously used during the 2024 National Population and Housing Census. Instead of keeping them idle, UBOS has redeployed the devices to institutions that play an important role in policy-making, research and community development. The beneficiaries include the Inter-Religious Council of Uganda (IRCU), National Planning Authority (NPA), Economic Policy Research Centre (EPRC), Presidential CEO Forum, Bugisu Kingdom, Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom and Rwenzururu Kingdom.

Speaking at the event, UBOS Executive Director Dr. Chris Mukiza said the donation shows the Bureau’s commitment to building a strong and active National Statistical System. He explained that religious, cultural and planning institutions are not only users of statistics but also producers of valuable data that can guide national development.

Dr. Mukiza stressed that the tablets and computers should strictly be used for official work such as data collection, analysis and reporting. He warned against personal use, noting that the devices were bought using government funds and must continue serving the public interest. He added that the equipment is still in good condition and can greatly improve administrative data systems if used properly.

Out of the total devices distributed, the Inter-Religious Council of Uganda received the largest share, with 3,500 tablets and three computers. Bugisu Kingdom received 250 tablets, Rwenzururu Kingdom 150 tablets, while NPA, EPRC and the Presidential CEO Forum each received 50 tablets. UBOS said it will continue offering technical support to help the institutions develop strong data systems and five-year strategic plans.

Dr. Joseph Serwadda, representing the Inter-Religious Council of Uganda, welcomed the donation and described it as timely. He revealed that the council had already set up a statistics unit to collect data from its seven member faiths. He promised that the tablets would be used responsibly to generate reliable data in areas such as health, education, tourism, climate action and livelihoods.

Bugisu Kingdom Deputy Prime Minister, Dr. Clet Wandui Masiga, said the kingdom plans to immediately deploy the tablets across its sub-counties. He noted that accurate and real-time data will support development projects aimed at improving the lives of the people in the region. He also called on UBOS to continue building the technical capacity of kingdom staff.

National Planning Authority’s Director for Research, Development and Performance, Dr. Rogers Matte, said the donation comes at a critical time as Uganda implements the Fourth National Development Plan. He emphasized that good planning depends on reliable data, adding that the tablets will help institutions set realistic targets and monitor progress effectively.

Dr. Mukiza concluded by urging all beneficiaries to integrate their data into the national statistical system. He said this will ensure that information collected at community, cultural and institutional levels contributes to national and global development planning. He expressed hope that the initiative will strengthen data use and promote informed decision-making across the country.
