From Security to Development!! UPDF Delivers Lifeline Water Projects in Northern Uganda

Must read

The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has handed over 44 rehabilitated boreholes to communities in Amuru and Nwoya districts, marking a major boost to access to clean and safe water. The boreholes were completed under Quick Impact Projects to commemorate the 45th Tarehe Sita anniversary celebrations. The handover ceremonies were held separately in the two districts and presided over by the Commander of the 501 Infantry Brigade, Col Nathan Bainomugisha, who represented the 4 Infantry Division Commander, Maj Gen Felix Busizoori.

During the handover, Col Bainomugisha urged residents to take good care of the water facilities and use them responsibly to ensure long-term benefit. He emphasized that the boreholes belong to the community and should be protected from misuse and vandalism. According to him, proper management will ensure that all residents have equal access to clean water now and in the future.

Col Bainomugisha also encouraged community members to fully embrace government development programmes such as the Parish Development Model, the Four-Acre Model, women empowerment initiatives, and youth livelihood projects. He noted that these programmes are designed to improve household incomes, promote self-reliance, and uplift the overall quality of life in rural communities.

Local leaders praised the UPDF for extending its role beyond security to supporting development. Amuru Resident District Commissioner, Mr Oceng Osborn Geoffrey, commended the army for contributing to agriculture, water provision, and construction. Amuru District LC V Chairperson, Hon Lakony Michael, highlighted the importance of peace in enabling development, cautioning against messages that could reopen wounds from the Lord’s Resistance Army insurgency. Community leaders in both Amuru and Nwoya thanked the UPDF for restoring peace, improving sanitation, and working closely with civilians to build a better future for northern Uganda.
