A man who had been on the run after being accused of rape has finally been arrested in Bukedea District, Eastern Uganda. The suspect, known as Oyapa, was wanted by police in Mukono over a case of simple rape that had been registered under CRB 1783/2024. The case was opened after a victim and witnesses gave statements to the police, prompting an active investigation.
According to police sources, Oyapa disappeared shortly after the alleged rape incident, making it difficult for detectives to track him down. However, luck ran out for him when he was caught in Bukedea while impersonating a UPDF (Uganda People’s Defence Forces) officer. He was reportedly trying to extort money from supporters of the Speaker of Parliament, Ms. Anita Among, who also serves as the Woman Member of Parliament for Bukedea District.
Patrick Onyango, the spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan Police, confirmed the arrest. He explained that officers in Bukedea got suspicious and alerted detectives from Mukono, who had been closely following the case. Oyapa was then transferred from Bukedea to Mukono to face the rape-related charges.
Upon his arrest, police recorded his statement and also took him for a mental health examination as part of the legal procedures. Mr. Onyango said the case file has now been sent to the Resident State Attorney, who will review it and give legal advice on the next steps.
This dramatic arrest brings a major breakthrough in the case, and police are now waiting on the prosecutor’s decision as investigations continue.
