It was a dazzling night of celebration, creativity, and heartfelt recognition at the Uganda Film Festival 2025, held at the Uganda Institute of Information and Communications Technology (UICT) in Nakawa. The awards gala, the highlight of a week-long celebration organized by @UCC_Official, honored the brightest stars and the most powerful stories shaping Uganda’s film industry today.
One of the most moving and applauded moments of the night was the special recognition of former UCC Executive Director, Godfrey Mutabazi. Known for his visionary leadership, Mutabazi played a vital role in building the foundation of Uganda’s film industry during his time at the helm of the Uganda Communications Commission. His efforts led to the creation of platforms for local filmmakers, supported growth in the creative sector, and helped elevate Uganda’s stories to a broader audience. His award was a powerful reminder that behind every successful film movement are leaders who believe in the power of storytelling. The audience filled with government officials, filmmakers, and stakeholders rose in applause to honor his years of service and impact.
The night also celebrated standout performances and technical achievements. The Best Supporting Actor in a Feature Film award went to Masaba Roger Magona for his compelling role in KIMOTE, while Debie Kagisha claimed Best Supporting Actress for her nuanced performance in FATAL. Rising talent took the spotlight as Kisaakye Passion received the Rising Star Award for her memorable role in NKINZI, signaling a bright future ahead.
In recognition of regional excellence, the Best East African Film award went to When The Gospel Speaks, and the Best Student Film was awarded to Dinner For Three, showcasing the next generation of storytellers. The Best Regional Film honor went to JIMBI, a strong reminder that local stories can have powerful, universal appeal.
Technical artistry was also highly celebrated. Battle For Earth earned the Best Sound Design Award for its immersive audio, while Nabakiibi Joanah Jojo and Elgon Label won Best Costume Design for shaping the story through wardrobe. Kebirungi Rose Lily took home the Best Make-up Award for her transformative work in KIMOTE, and Joseph Mumpi Sserubiri, also for KIMOTE, won Best Production Design for crafting unforgettable visual environments.
A highlight of the awards was the recognition of writing—the soul of every film. The Best Screenplay Award went to Esther Nampewo and Rehema Nanfuka for their work on NKINZI, praised for its emotional depth and narrative strength.
This year’s theme, “Celebrating Local Stories with Global Impact,” was felt throughout the event. From rising stars to industry veterans, from breakthrough scripts to stunning visual design, the Uganda Film Festival 2025 proved that the country’s creative heartbeat is strong and growing. And in honoring leaders like Godfrey Mutabazi, the festival not only celebrated the present, but also paid tribute to those who helped make this creative revolution possible.
The Uganda Film Festival continues to be a beacon for talent, vision, and the power of storytelling. As new voices emerge and bold stories are told, the legacy grows—shaped by artists, nurtured by leaders, and celebrated by all.
