Hon. Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi Brought to Butambala Chief Magistrate’s Court in Terrorism Case

Must read

3rd February 2026 — Butambala, Uganda:
Outgoing Butambala County Member of Parliament Hon. Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi was brought before the Butambala Chief Magistrate’s Court today as part of ongoing proceedings in a high-profile terrorism case that has captured national attention.

Kivumbi, who also serves as a senior official in the National Unity Platform (NUP), was remanded in custody following his initial arraignment late last month on charges alleging involvement in violent attacks in parts of Butambala District in January 2026. The prosecution claims Kivumbi and others still at large orchestrated coordinated acts — including attacks on a police station and an Electoral Commission tally centre — intended to influence or intimidate the government and public for political ends. Several vehicles and sections of road were reportedly damaged during the unrest, and seven people were killed during related clashes.

Because terrorism is categorised as a serious offence under Ugandan law and is triable only in the High Court, Chief Magistrate Deogratius Ssejjemba has been listing the matter for mentions pending committal. At his earlier hearing, the court remanded Kivumbi to Kitalya Prison, and he has since remained in custody as investigations continue.

During today’s brief mention, Kivumbi was accompanied by legal representatives from a newly appointed defence team, with veteran lawyers expected to take lead on his case. The proceedings took place under heightened security as the matter continues to draw significant public and political interest.

The next mention in the Chief Magistrate’s Court is expected to precede formal committal to the High Court, where the terrorism charges will ultimately be heard.
