Inside the EC Meeting!! Roadmap Progress, New Tech & the Fight Against Misinformation

Must read

The Electoral Commission (EC) today held an important briefing for Government Communication Officers (GCOFUG) and members of the media at Hotel Africana. The meeting focused on the final preparations for the 2026 General Elections and the key responsibilities of communication teams during this critical period.

During the opening remarks, EC officials highlighted the progress made so far on the electoral roadmap. They stressed the importance of sharing accurate, timely information with the public to avoid confusion and help citizens understand the electoral process clearly. Speakers also raised concerns about the growing challenges of commercialised politics, misinformation, disinformation and hate speech—especially on social media platforms where false information spreads very quickly.

One of the major highlights of the briefing was the presentation and live demonstration of the Biometric Voter Verification Kit (BVVK). This device will play a major role in ensuring fairness on voting day. According to EC officials, the BVVK will help confirm the identity of each voter using fingerprints, supporting the principle of One Man, One Vote and reducing the chances of electoral fraud.

The session ended with a call for strong cooperation between the Electoral Commission, government communication teams, and the media. Officials emphasized that responsible communication will be essential in maintaining peace, trust, and transparency as Uganda moves closer to the 2026 elections.
