After more than three weeks of heavy fighting, the strategic town of Bariire in Somalia’s Lower Shabelle region has been taken back from the militant group al-Shabaab. The operation was carried out by the joint forces of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) and the Somali National Army (SNA). This important victory follows the earlier liberation of Sabid-Anole in June 2025, making Bariire the second town freed by the UPDF from al-Shabaab’s control in recent months.
The UPDF is currently operating under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), a transitional mission aimed at restoring peace and eventually handing over security responsibilities fully to Somalia’s own forces led by the SNA. This collaboration highlights the ongoing commitment of regional partners to help Somalia regain control of its territories and push back extremist groups threatening peace.
Al-Shabaab’s presence near Mogadishu has been a major concern for security forces, as it threatens to destabilize the capital and surrounding areas. The group is internationally recognized as a terrorist organization, and its recent resurgence in parts of Lower Shabelle prompted this strong counteroffensive. The success in Bariire marks a significant step in the fight against terrorism and is hoped to bring more stability to Somalia’s main city and the surrounding region.
Colonel Chris Magezi, Military Assistant to the Chief of Defence Forces of the UPDF, emphasized the importance of the operation and the continued efforts by joint forces to keep pressure on al-Shabaab and secure peace for the people of Somalia.
This victory sends a strong message that coordinated military efforts can reclaim territories and restore hope to communities long affected by violence. The mission continues as AU and Somali troops work together to secure lasting peace.
