Today, June 10, 2025, marks the final day for nominating candidates for the special interest group elections in Uganda. These elections are for village committee positions that represent three important groups in society: the youth, older persons, and persons with disabilities. The Electoral Commission (EC) has been receiving nominations since June 2, and today is the deadline.
Julius Mucunguzi, the spokesperson for the Electoral Commission, called on all eligible Ugandans from these groups to take part. “Today is the last day for nomination of all those who want to contest, participate, and offer themselves to lead,” he said. Nomination centers at sub-county headquarters, division wards, and town councils across Uganda are open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
To qualify, youth must be between the ages of 18 and 30, while older persons must be 60 years or older. Persons with disabilities must meet conditions that are clearly defined by the law. These requirements help ensure that each group is fairly represented in the village committees.
The Electoral Commission is encouraging all eligible Ugandans to get involved, reminding them that participation in elections is a powerful way to make their voices heard. “Your vote is your voice,” Mucunguzi stated, highlighting how important this process is to Uganda’s democracy.
These special interest group elections are the first step in the country’s 2025–2026 general elections roadmap. After nominations close today, campaigning will begin on June 12 and go on until June 14. Voting will then take place in stages: older persons will vote on June 16, persons with disabilities on June 17, and the youth on June 19.
This election process gives people from different walks of life the chance to help shape their communities. It’s a moment of hope
