Three police officers have been arrested after a local businessman, Turyasingura Derrick, was shot during an illegal operation in Bushenyi district. The incident occurred on 24th September 2025 in Nyakabingo village, Rushinya parish, when the officers, accompanied by a court bailiff, attempted to arrest a 64-year-old debtor, Muhereza David.
According to the police report, the operation turned chaotic after resistance from Muhereza David’s family. The officers, who were armed but not officially deployed or cleared by Bushenyi Police Station, allegedly fired warning shots to protect themselves. Unfortunately, one of the bullets hit Turyasingura Derrick in the foot, leaving the young man injured. He was rushed to KIU Hospital by relatives for treatment.
Investigations revealed that the warrant used during the arrest had not been sanctioned by Bushenyi CPS, and the officers involved—Pc Mutumba, Pc Owesigyemukama, and Pc Apayi, all from the FFU Greater Bushenyi region—were operating outside official procedures. Muhereza David, the debtor, was taken to Bushenyi Chief Magistrate’s Court and remanded, while inquiries continue into the role of the court bailiff who led the unauthorized operation.
Police authorities registered a case of unlawful wounding under CRB 837/2025, and detectives along with the district SOCO visited and processed the crime scene. Statements have been recorded from witnesses, and the victim has been issued PF3 forms for medical examination. Arrests of the three officers and the bailiff are pending as investigations proceed.
The incident has sparked concern over police conduct in Bushenyi, highlighting the dangers of unsanctioned operations and the urgent need for strict enforcement of legal procedures. Authorities continue to investigate how the warrant was obtained and why proper protocol was not followed, with more details expected in the coming days.
