Must read

The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has sent a new team of soldiers, known as Battle Group 44, to Somalia. These troops will serve under the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).

A flag-off ceremony was held at the International Peace Support Operations Training Centre (IPSO-TC) in Singo, Nakaseke District. The event was led by Major General Stephen Mugerwa, who represented the Commander of Land Forces, Lt Gen Kayanja Muhanga.

Maj Gen Mugerwa reminded the soldiers to remain disciplined and behave well while on the mission. “Carry our flag high with good battle discipline. Take orders seriously and avoid unnecessary drama,” he told the troops. He also asked commanders to make sure that everyone stays accountable and focused.

Brigadier General Patrick Otongo, the head of the training center, said the troops are well prepared after completing their pre-deployment training. “You have all it takes to perform your duties excellently in the mission area,” he said.

He also thanked Colonel Julius Nyedwoha, the chief instructor, and his team for preparing the soldiers. Brig Gen Otongo also appreciated the support from the Land Force Headquarters and the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs.

The new battle group now begins its mission in Somalia, carrying Uganda’s hopes for peace and stability in the region.
