Uganda’s journey toward the 2026 General Elections is gaining strong momentum. Since the relaunch of the Electoral Commission (EC) Roadmap in July 2024, several major activities have been completed to prepare the country for a free, fair, and inclusive election process.
Justice Byabakama Mugenyi Simon, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, shared this progress during the National Stakeholders’ Workshop under the theme #SIGsElectionsUG and #ECRoadmap2026. He noted that the Commission has successfully carried out several key activities that form the foundation of credible elections.
One of the main achievements so far has been the demarcation of electoral areas. This process ensures that every part of the country is fairly represented and that constituencies are properly aligned. The reorganisation of polling stations has also taken place to make voting easier and more accessible for all citizens.
A special focus has been given to Persons with Disabilities (PWDs). The Commission has taken time to map them on the National Voters Register, a move that aims to promote inclusive participation in the elections. In addition, the EC has recruited temporary election officials, who will play a critical role in supporting the voting process.
Justice Byabakama also confirmed that the Commission has already conducted the General Update and Display of the National Voters Register as well as the SIGs (Special Interest Groups) Registers. These steps are vital in making sure that every eligible voter is accounted for and that the records are accurate.
The full statement and details about this progress can be found on the EC’s official website at ec.or.ug/node/774.
As Uganda looks ahead to the 2026 elections, the continued involvement of stakeholders and the public will be key to building a transparent and trustworthy electoral process. The work done so far is a positive sign that the country is on the right path.
