The Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) has taken a big step toward improving Uganda’s business and legal environment with the launch of its first-ever Case Digest. The event took place on June 25, 2025, at the URSB headquarters in Kololo, Kampala, and was attended by key leaders from the legal, business, and government sectors.
Hon. Justice Mike Chibita, who was the Guest of Honour, praised the Case Digest as a powerful tool that will bring greater clarity, fairness, and efficiency to Uganda’s justice system—especially in matters that affect the economy. He said the publication is not only timely but also essential for helping judges, lawyers, businesspeople, and policymakers make informed decisions. By summarising key rulings and legal principles, the digest promotes consistency, predictability, and trust in the country’s commercial law.
This new digest includes a wide range of decisions made by URSB Registrars in their legal roles, such as cases involving company registrations, trademark disputes, copyright issues, and insolvency matters. It also features important court rulings where URSB was directly involved. This makes it a rich source of legal information and a useful guide for anyone navigating Uganda’s commercial justice system.
Rt. Hon. Amb. Canon Francis K. Butagira, the Chairman of the URSB Board, described the digest as more than just a legal document. He called it a sign of URSB’s dedication to transparency, public awareness, and supporting Uganda’s journey toward formalising businesses and growing the economy.
Registrar General Mercy K. Kainobwisho echoed these views, saying the digest is not only about sharing decisions—it’s about building a lasting record of legal knowledge. This knowledge will help lawyers, businesses, scholars, and the general public better understand the rules that shape Uganda’s commercial space.
Commissioner for Legal Services, Ms. Caroline T. Egesa, added that having clear and reliable legal guidance is essential for boosting investment and innovation. She said the digest provides simple yet powerful legal references that will help businesses—especially small and medium-sized ones—avoid confusion, reduce legal costs, and resolve disputes more quickly.
The Case Digest is expected to become a regular publication, with future versions offering even more insights and broader coverage. URSB is encouraging all stakeholders, including other government bodies, legal professionals, and business leaders, to use the digest and share ideas for improving it.
The launch was a strong show of support for Uganda’s efforts to build a stronger, more transparent, and investor-friendly business environment. With the Case Digest in place, URSB is bringing “justice without robes” closer to the people swift, clear, and ready to help Uganda grow.
