Kasibante Backs Down! Supreme Court Petition on 2026 Election Set to Be Withdrawn, Cites legal battle costs

Must read

Robert Kasibante of the National Progressive Party (NPP) has applied to the Supreme Court to withdraw his petition challenging the results of the 2026 presidential election. The petition had sought to contest the victory of President-elect Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, but Kasibante now says continuing with the case has become too expensive and technically demanding.

In his application, Kasibante explains that the financial burden of pursuing the petition has grown beyond his capacity. He points to high legal costs, strict court procedures and the complex nature of election petitions at the Supreme Court, which require extensive preparation, expert legal teams and significant resources to sustain.

Kasibante is seeking formal permission from the court to discontinue the case against President-elect Museveni, the Electoral Commission and the Attorney General. Under the law, a petitioner cannot simply abandon such a case without the court’s approval, making his application a crucial step toward officially ending the legal challenge.

The withdrawal marks a significant development in the post-election period, as the petition was one of the cases questioning the credibility and outcome of the 2026 presidential vote. Its termination would further clear the path for the conclusion of election-related court battles surrounding the polls.

Observers say the move highlights the heavy demands involved in challenging presidential election results in court. While Kasibante has not gone into the merits of his case, his decision underscores how financial strain and legal complexity can influence political and legal strategies, even in matters of national importance.
