Uganda is mourning after a tragic road accident claimed the lives of 46 people along the Kampala–Gulu Highway at Kitaleeba Village. According to a statement released by the Uganda Police Force on October 22, 2025, the latest update from the hospital confirmed that 46 people have so far died as a result of the crash.
Police spokesperson SP Kananura Michael, from the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, revealed that several victims were found unconscious at the scene, and some may have been mistakenly included in the initial count of the dead. Authorities are working closely with medical and emergency teams to verify the exact number of fatalities and survivors.
The horrific accident has sent shockwaves through the nation, sparking renewed calls for improved road safety measures on Uganda’s major highways. Emergency responders rushed to the scene shortly after the crash, providing first aid and transporting the injured to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Police say they are continuing investigations to establish the cause of the accident and have promised to share accurate updates as the situation becomes clearer. “We are working in close coordination with health and emergency services to ensure timely updates as the situation develops,” the police statement read.
As Uganda comes to terms with the tragedy, many are expressing their grief and solidarity with the affected families. The Kampala–Gulu Highway, one of the country’s busiest routes, has seen a number of serious accidents in recent years, prompting renewed discussions on the need for stricter traffic enforcement and safer driving practices.
