The police in Tororo, Eastern Uganda over the Weekend arrested three medical officers in connection to the theft of drugs from Tororo referral hospital.
The incident occurred on the 17/02/2020 at around 2pm. The suspects who are now behind police bars include; Obbo Isaac, a store man at Nagongera HC IV, Opuna Dan Peter, a store man at Tororo HC IV and OchoHussein , the driver to the ambulance.
According to police,the suspects used an ambulance belonging to the hospital under Reg. number UG 3701M, to transport a box containing 2000 pieces of dexamethasone inject-able drugs under batch number l 0313, which was recovered and exhibited.
“We believe the practice has been going on for a while and would like to thank the public who tipped police and arrested the suspects,” says Polly Namaye the Deputy Police spokesperson.
She added arrest should put corrupt hospital workers who take advantage of their insider status to steal drugs on notice; we shall continue targeting them for arrest and prosecution.
She says the suspects will appear before court and face charges of theft and abuse of office. Last week State Minister for Health Hon Nabanja while touring hospitals across the Country warned health workers who steal government drugs and sell them to their private hospitals.
