Outgoing Butambala County Member of Parliament, Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi, has once again been remanded to prison as investigations into his case continue. Kivumbi, who also serves as the deputy president for Buganda under the National Unity Platform (NUP), appeared in court alongside 24 other co-accused persons. The court ruled that they remain in custody at Kitalya Prison until March 10, 2026.
The decision means that Kivumbi and his co-accused will spend more time behind bars as the prosecution carries on with its inquiries. According to court proceedings, the state informed the magistrate that investigations are still ongoing and are not yet complete. As a result, the court granted the request to extend their remand.
Speaking after the court session, defense lawyer Medard Lubega Sseggona shared his concerns about the continued detention of his clients. He explained that the defense team is closely monitoring the progress of the investigations and is ready to respond once the prosecution finalizes its work. Sseggona emphasized that the accused persons are entitled to a fair and speedy process under the law.
Supporters of Kivumbi gathered outside the court, expressing mixed emotions over the ruling. Some said they were disappointed by the extension, while others remained hopeful that justice would prevail in the end. As a senior leader within NUP and a well-known political figure in Butambala County, Kivumbi’s case has attracted significant public attention.
With the next court date set for March 10, 2026, all eyes will remain on the legal process. The coming weeks are expected to be critical as the prosecution works to complete its investigations. For now, Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi and his co-accused will remain at Kitalya Prison, waiting for the next step in a case that continues to spark discussion across the country.
