The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has announced major leadership changes in its top command, with Brigadier Paul Muwonge appointed as the new commander of the Mountain Infantry Division. This division is based in Fort Portal, located in the western region of Uganda. Brigadier Muwonge takes over from Major General James Birungi, who had only assumed command of the division in April this year. Before this appointment, Brigadier Muwonge was serving as the Deputy Commander of the same unit, making his promotion a smooth transition in leadership.
Major General Birungi has been reassigned to a new diplomatic role as Uganda’s Military Attaché and Defence Advisor (DA) in Bujumbura, Burundi. He takes over from Brigadier Simon Ochan, who has completed his tour of duty in Burundi and will now report back to the UPDF Joint Services Headquarters for a new posting.
This reshuffle comes after several previous changes within the top military leadership. Earlier this year, Major General Birungi was appointed Chief of Defence Intelligence and Security (CDIS), replacing Major General Richard Otto, who previously led the Mountain Infantry Division. Now, with these recent moves, Brigadier Muwonge is stepping into a critical leadership role during an important time for the UPDF.
In his new position, Brigadier Muwonge will also lead Operation Shujaa — a joint military effort between the UPDF and the Congolese army (FARDC). The operation’s main goal is to defeat the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), a rebel group operating in parts of eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Brigadier Muwonge recently accompanied the Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, on a working visit to Kinshasa, DRC, which highlights his increasing role in regional military affairs.
The UPDF extended congratulations to the officers on their new appointments and expressed confidence in their abilities to serve with excellence. The Defence Forces continue to emphasize strong leadership as they carry out critical missions both at home and across borders.
