Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has today appointed Abel Kagumire as the new Commissioner in Charge of Customs.
Kagumire replaces Dickson Kateshumbwa who was recently sacked by President Museveni.
Kateshumbwa is now in the race to represent Sheema Municipality in Parliament come 2021 Elections.
Kagumire beat 17 people who had applied for the same seat and among are Sarah Kasheku. She has been recently in the news for supporting smuggling and tax evasion by some Companies which sources say could have cost her the job which she was assured of.
Mr Kagumire describes himself on his twitter account as “Patriotic, Passionate about Trade Facilitation, Service with Integrity & Capacity Building.”
He has previously served as Assistant Commissioner Customs Audit and Manager Customs at URA in the last over 17 years at the tax collection institution.
The appointment follows the URA Board of Directors Special Board meeting held on 26th August, 2020 where Mr Kagumire was among candidates interviewed for the vacant Senior Management positions in the Departments of Customs, Corporate Services and Domestic Taxes.
Other appointments are Commissioner Corporate Services – Mr Richard Kariisa and John Tinka Katungwensi – Assistant Commissioner large taxpayers’ office.
The effective date for the above appointments is 1st September, 2020 according to a statement issued by URA.
