Court Remands MP Allan Ssewanyana Over Flaunting Covid19 Guidelines

Makindye grade one Magistrate Jude Okumu has today morning remanded Makindye West Member of Parliament Allan Ssewanyana to Kitalya prison until 23rd November 2020 for flaunting Covid 19 guidelines.

Ssewanyana was arrested on 15th November 2020 for staging a campaign rally at Mulungu Landing Site in Munyonyo which had more than the required 200 people.

He was charged with undermining Electoral Commission guidelines on election campaigns amidst the Coronavirus pandemic which charges he denied saying his political enemies want to decampaign him in Makindye West.

“All this is politics. They are fighting me so that I do not win in Makindye West. It is not about the spread of COVID-19,” Ssewanyana said.

The legislator also said producing him late in court was a deliberate move by police officers so that he does not get bail.

“My sureties have been in court since morning but Police intended to bring me in court late so that I do not apply for bail. ” he said.

Court will listen to Ssewanyana’s bail application on Monday, November 23, 2020.
