Old Kampala police is holding one of its own officers who shot and killed a suspect whom he had gone to arrest on allegations of raping a woman.
The arrested police officer has been identified as Sgt Odongo and attached at police patrol unit.
Patrick Onyango the police spokesperson for Kampala metropolitan confirmed the arrest of a police officer saying that investigations are on going.
“We have arrested our own officer for killing a suspect whom he had gone to arrest on allegations of raping a woman,” says Onyango.
Onyango added that the officer shot and killed a rape suspect as he resisted arrest and attempted to disarm other officers, who were effecting an arrest.
“The officers discharged warning shots, but the suspect went ahead and attempted to grab a gun from one of the officers. The officer’s colleague fired bullets that killed the suspect.” Onyango said.
Onyango identified the killed suspect as Ali Ambayo, a resident of Lugala and was a private security guard at a garage near Kosovo junction.
Patrick Onyango added that the suspect is alleged to have raped a woman on Wednesday (21/10/2020) in Lugala, Rubaga Division, and Kampala Capital City.
“The incident happened near a location where there are CCTV cameras and detectives retrieved the footage, analyzed it and identified the suspect using the CCTV footage,” Onyango said.
Onyango appealed to members of the public to always cooperate with police officers while on duty and not to resist arrest of any form.
