Prison Break; UPDF Arrests Seven Prison Escapees

Uganda People’s Defense Forces and other security agencies have arrested seven prisoners among those that escaped with guns from Singila prison in Moroto district.

Yesterday, a total number 219 prisoners escaped from the prison disarmed the prison guards and stole blocked the prison armory before taking all the guns.

Frank Baine the Uganda Prisons spokesperson told us that inmates overpowered prison warders and broke into the armory and took off with 14 guns before running towards Mt. Moroto.

Baine adds that a joint operation between UPDF and police was deployed to chase the  escaped prisoners from Moroto mountains where they exchanged live bullets that claimed one UPDF officer.

“Three escapes were killed during the pursuit whereas seven have been re-arrested and returned to prison,” says Frank Baine today morning.

Baine added that UPDF soldiers were killed by the prison escapes in the exchange of the gunshots while being chased in the mountains of Moroto.

The prison spokesperson adds that the operation by UPDF in pursuit of escapees from Singila prison in Moroto to rearrest them and recover the stolen guns is still on going.

Most of the escapees are Karamajong warriors who were arrested by the UPDF in several operations to rid the area of guns.
