Police and UPDF in Mbarara have started investigating circumstances under which a solidier attached to Second Divison Reserve Force was shot dead by a security Guard.
The deceased has been identified as L/cpl Denis Muhindo a Mukonjo by tribe and a resident of Ruti Zone in Mbarara City.
The deceased was also guarding Birya United Agencies LTD also located in Ruti Mbarara.
The security guard who is currently behind bars at Mbarara Police station for murder has been identified as Eldad Kyakabale Private security guard attached to G and D Security Company and was guarding at Classic Wine Factory in Ruti, Mbarara South Division.
Eyewitnesses say the shooting occurred at around 1:00am when most of the people were already asleep.
“The UPDF Solider came drunk past curfew time and when he reached Classic Wine Factory in Mbarara he took cover as if he was planning a robbery,” says any eyewitness.
He adds that the Private guard who was sober observed the mission of the UPDF solider and he suspected him to be a robber.
“When he rounded him off and asked to identify himself, the solider instead wanted to grab a gun from him which prompted the guard to open the safe and shot him dead,” another eyewitness says.
Local residents who were drinking with the UPDF officer before he was shot dead say he was so arrogant in the bar and he even fought with some customers before he was chased away.
“We were in the bar past curfew time and when we told him to speak at less volume because police would arrest us, he ignored us and said he was a trained UPDF officer and police would nothing to him,” says another drunkard
He added that when it reached at around 1:00am, the bar owner said they should pay before they are served and when he asked for a beer the waiter asked him money and he rejected.
“When they refused to serve him before paying, he caused chaos and started fighting, we chased him away and as he moved, he promised to come back with the gun and shoot us,” another bar customer says.
Samson Kasasira the Police Spokesperson for Rwizi region when contacted confirmed the shooting and said the security guard was arrested pending investigations.
“The murder occurred when the two security chiefs picked a quarrel at Classic Wine Factory where Kyakabale was guarding,” says Kasasira.
Police boss says after the shooting, officers were called and sealed off the murder scene.
“The Scene was visited and the killer gun which belonged to police number UP POL 42511105833 with two rounds of ammunitions and cartilage were recovered,” he says
He added that the body was taken to Mbarara Referral Hospital for postmortem as investigations continue to establish the motive.
He however warned the public especially bar owners to respect the Presidential Directives of not opening the bar.
Last week AIGP Edward Ochom, the Director Operations in Uganda Police vowed to arrest the security Chiefs who guard bars as they operate at night.
“We shall arrest the security chiefs irrespective of the ranks and the security agency you are working for and we shall also arrest the customers,” says Ochom
