Police in Mityana District have arrested a teacher accused of administering severe corporal punishment to a Primary Seven pupil, leaving the learner with serious injuries. The incident has raised concern among parents and community members about the safety and treatment of pupils in schools.
The suspect has been identified as Bukenya Fredrick, aged 28, a resident of Nalyagonja Village in Kalangaalo Sub-county, Mityana District. He is a teacher at Nalyagonja Bright Way Junior School, where the alleged incident took place.
According to preliminary reports, the victim, a Primary Seven pupil, was accused of stealing 5,000 shillings and a mathematical set from a fellow pupil. After the accusation was made, the teacher reportedly ordered the girl to return the items she was suspected to have taken.
However, the situation reportedly escalated when the teacher allegedly tied the pupil and beat her severely, causing serious bodily harm. The punishment was described as excessive and alarming, prompting concern from those who later learned about the incident.
A relative of the victim later reported the matter to Central Police Station (CPS) Mityana, which immediately launched investigations into the case. The victim was taken for a medical examination to assess the extent of the injuries she sustained during the punishment.
Police also advised the parents of the pupil to seek appropriate medical treatment to help the child recover from the injuries. Authorities have emphasized that while discipline in schools is important, it must be carried out within the law and should not harm learners.
The suspect was arrested and is currently in custody as investigations continue. Police have confirmed that Bukenya Fredrick will be produced before court once investigations are completed to answer charges related to aggravated corporal punishment.
