Police at Nateete have successfully arrested a suspect linked to the theft of motor vehicle number plates in different parts of Kampala and Wakiso. The suspect has been identified as Semuju Steven, a 33-year-old resident of Busega. His arrest followed careful investigations by security agencies after several complaints about stolen number plates in the area.
The case took a strange turn on the night of February 11, 2026, when unknown people broke into the home of Lutamaguzi Patrick in Busega–Kabale, Rubaga Division, Kampala District. The thieves entered his compound and removed the number plate from his silver Toyota Opa, registration number UAN 796B. In a surprising twist, the suspect left behind a phone number written on the vehicle. The number, 0759-353167, later became an important clue that helped police track him down.
After his arrest, Semuju Steven reportedly cooperated with investigators and led them to several hiding places. From these locations in Busega–Kabale and Kiteemu Kivulu in Kyengera Town Council, Wakiso District, police recovered seven stolen number plates. The recovered plates include UAH 286S, UA 309BQ, UA 682BZ, UAM 277G, UAN 796B, and UBK 264Y (pair). The recovery brought relief to the victims who had earlier reported the thefts.
Police say the suspect is currently in custody as investigations continue. He is expected to be formally charged in court. Authorities have warned the public to remain alert and report any suspicious activities in their communities. The successful operation highlights the importance of community cooperation and thorough investigations in fighting crime.
Security agencies have reassured residents of Busega, Rubaga Division, and Kyengera that efforts are ongoing to curb theft and protect property. They also reminded vehicle owners to take extra precautions to safeguard their vehicles and number plates.
