Police Step Up as Uganda Heads into Critical Election Phase

Must read

With just days to the upcoming elections, the police have issued a strong message to the public about the current state of affairs. According to ACP Kituuma Rusoke, the overall situation across the country remains calm, although there have been a few isolated cases of violence. These incidents involve political supporters attacking each other, damaging property, and using media platforms to insult and spread lies about opponents.

Campaigning for the NRM primaries for both Member of Parliament and LC5 Chairperson officially ended today, July 14, 2025. However, despite clear guidelines from the Electoral Commission and laws set to guide the process, some candidates and their supporters have been breaking the rules. Some of the problems reported include hiring gangs to cause chaos, using loud public address systems to disrupt rival rallies, and engaging in hate speech on radio stations.

To manage the situation, police have identified hotspots where trouble is likely to happen. The Inspector General of Police has personally visited key districts like Sembabule, Mbarara, Isingiro, Kabale, Rukiga, and Rukungiri. There, he met with candidates, district security committees, and other stakeholders to promote peace and understanding. These committees are playing an active role in making sure that order is maintained.

Police have already taken action in areas where the law was being broken. In some cases, crowds were dispersed, and arrests were made. Fortunately, several places have experienced total peace and calm, showing that cooperation can work when everyone respects the law.

As the election day approaches, police and other security agencies are fully committed to ensuring that the voting process is safe and fair. They have promised to keep a close eye on all activities, especially at tally centres. The public is warned that no firearms will be allowed at these centres, and only a limited number of authorized agents will be allowed inside. Anyone who tries to sneak in goons or extra supporters will be blocked.

The police have also reminded everyone that no more campaigning will be allowed beyond today. All political actors and citizens are being urged to respect the laws, avoid violence, and work together for a peaceful election. With strong coordination among security agencies and the cooperation of the public, the police are confident that Uganda can hold free and fair elections in a peaceful environment.
