The Kampala Metropolitan Police together with other security agencies and local leaders have carried out a series of major security operations across different parts of the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area following growing complaints from the public about rising criminal activities.
According to police, the operations were aimed at disrupting criminal gangs that have been troubling residents through robberies, phone snatching, and attacks on pedestrians, especially during night hours. Many residents had raised concerns about the increasing abuse of narcotic substances, which authorities believe is contributing to many of the crimes being committed in the city.
The first operation was conducted on 11th March 2026 in Musajjalumbwa Zone and Namayiba Bus Terminal under the Old Kampala policing area. These places have reportedly become hotspots for criminal gangs that target pedestrians and unsuspecting travelers. During the operation, security officers arrested 97 suspects believed to be involved in robberies, drug abuse, and other criminal activities. Police also recovered several exhibits during the raid, including narcotic substances, knives, a hammer, and other suspected tools used to commit crimes. The suspects were later charged at Old Kampala Police Station and remain in custody as they await court proceedings.
On 12th March 2026, another operation was carried out in Kiwatule Central Zone where authorities have been monitoring increased cases of narcotic substance abuse and related crimes. During this operation, 28 suspects were arrested. Police said the suspects are currently being detained as security officers carry out screening before they are taken to court to face the necessary charges.
At the same time, joint security teams conducted additional operations during the night of 11th to 12th March 2026 in Seeta and Nasuti areas in Mukono District. These areas had also been identified as crime hotspots linked to drug abuse, robberies, burglaries, and theft. The operation resulted in the arrest of 50 more suspects who are currently being held in police custody as investigations continue before they are formally charged.
In total, 175 suspects were arrested during the coordinated security operations carried out across the Kampala Metropolitan Area and Mukono District. Authorities say these operations are part of a wider effort to restore safety and peace in communities that have recently experienced an increase in criminal activities.
Police have assured the public that similar disruptive operations will continue in different areas to dismantle criminal networks, reduce the abuse of narcotic substances, and improve security for residents and businesses. Members of the public have also been encouraged to keep cooperating with the police by sharing information that can help prevent crime and ensure that those involved in illegal activities are brought to justice.
The Kampala Metropolitan Police say they remain committed to protecting the public and making sure communities feel safe both during the day and at night.
